I’m the kind of person who really does not understand much about direction and geography unless I have a map. There are some good country and city maps of the Philippines available from Nelles, Periplus, the locally published EZ maps and some other maps sometimes available from National Bookstores. None of these are really of a scale to be useful for anything but an overview. So, I recently took a trip to the local National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) map sales office in Iloilo City. In Iloilo City, the office is on Fort San Pedro Road, just across from the wharf for pumpboats to Buenavista, Guimaras. The map sales official, Ma. Lucille Licarus, was well informed, very helpful and seemed to have good inventory. I found quite up-to-date (1993) and detailed (1:5000) maps of my neighborhood in Molo and 1:50,000 topographic maps of all the areas I was interested in in Iloilo and Guimaras provinces. The 1:50,000 topos I bought were from 1953 so pretty out of date in certain respects. I bought nine maps in all for P1155. They also had nautical charts available. You can check the NAMRIA website for the location of the office serving your location. http://www.namria.gov.ph/

  1. Doug,

I did just check the NAMRIA website and it is working, at least from here.

I agree, the EZ maps are not great. There’s another Iloilo map published by the Iloilo Business Club called “Fascinating Iloilo”. I got my copies at the Molo CalTex station — cheaper and better but I don’t know if it’s still available. For Panay Island generally the “Negros and Panay Road Map” published by PDP Digital is much better than the EZ Map. It’s available at National Bookstore for P195.

  2. Douglas,

I bought quite a few of the 1:5,000 NAMRIA Iloilo City quadrangle maps, including the one covering the Puerto Real subdivision. The map was done before Puerto Real was developed. I’d scan the Puerto Real section and email it to you but we are moving and I have all the maps bundled up. Maybe I can do it after we get moved and resettled. You must have seen that Google Earth has upgraded its Iloilo City coverage. We’re thrilled that the upgrade includes our property in Tigbauan.

  3. NAMRIA is exactly what I have been searching for. I love the old maps as well as the most up to date. Now, getting these maps into my possession? At least now I know where the office is located. My map quest is for Iloilo City and especially the La Paz district.

  4. Bob and Carol, if you want a map of the city, which highlights the malls and the eateries, Flavours of Iloilo website has very good ones. But maybe you already know that…it has a link to your website..
