Inverter Air Conditioners – we give up on inverters and on Samsung

Inverter air conditioning units may be a bad choice for many in the Philippines and other tropical locations, but you won’t hear that from air conditioning salesperson or in the glowing advertisements for them.
Inverter units are highly promoted, cost a great deal more than conventional units, but supposedly save enough money to easily repay the extra cost in months. There are a number of problems with this rosy view of inverter air conditioners.

Inverter units use advanced technology involving more electronics, higher refrigerant pressures, higher voltages and more complexity. A conventional air conditioning unit runs pretty much like a refrigerator. When cooling is needed, the simple AC current compressor runs until the room is cool and then shuts off, recycling as needed to cool the room. It’s not unusual for conventional units to run a decade or more with only routine cleaning. Alternating current is what you get from your wall outlets.
Inverter air conditioners use compressors running on DC current. The DC compressors don’t cycle on and off, they are able to just slow down as the room is cool and speed up if more cooling is needed. Conventional compressors use extra electricity when cycling on and off, inverter units don’t. An oversize conventional unit is the worst choice, as it has to cycle off and on frequently. An undersized conventional unit can run more continuously and can actually be more efficient than an inverter unit. The inverter units use extra electricity to convert the power supply from AC to DC.

The money saving scenarios presented in the inverter brochures should not be taken at face value. One brochure in front of us claims 50% savings for the inverter unit. It compares a conventional 1.5HP unit to a 1.5HP inverter. It assumes a room area of 16.5 meters. This is the first problem. We feel a 1.5HP conventional unit is too large for a 16.6 sq meter room. A 1HP conventional unit would run much more efficiently than a 1.5HP conventional unit and possibly as efficiently the bigger inverter unit.
But the dirty secret about with inverter units in the Philippines and other tropical places is increased repair costs and reduced longevity. Conventional air conditioners often run for decades. Our 1.5HP Samsung inverter is just shy of five years old. So far it has blown out two main circuit boards because lizards crept into the high power main circuit board in the outdoor unit. This incinerated the poor lizard and the circuit board. Each board cost P7,000 ($155) to replace. In other cases ants and mice have blown boards. If you live near the ocean, salt air can corrode the boards. This is a wide spread problem that you are not going to learn about from the salesmen, but ask the service personnel, and you’ll get the real story.

Conventional air conditioners do not have these high power, lizard electrocuting, self-destructing boards.  We had a visit from a friend from Australia.  They have exactly the same problems with geckos shorting out inverter units.  We have also read similar reports from Thailand.  The Australian friend concluded that inverter units are just not suitable for use there.  We have come to feel the same way regarding rural or suburban areas in the Philippines.  Non-inverter units are no longer sold in Australia due to government regulations intended to save electricity.  It’s our understanding that governments and utility companies like inverter units because their power consumption is more even, whereas conventional units impose significant loads when the compressor cycles on.  Any electric motor uses much more current to start up than it does when it is running.  That’s why an undersized conventional unit uses less electricity.  It mostly is running rather than cycling on and off.   Conventional units are still sold in the Philippines.

In the meantime the conventional Samsung 1HP unit we installed in our guest bedroom purrs along with no repairs at all. The Samsung Inverter cost P11,000 more than the conventional unit, repairs to the inverter unit (so far) P14,000.
So, in our view you pay considerably more for the inverter when you buy it, it might or might not use less electricity but these savings are offset by high repair costs.
Manufacturers are aware of these circuit board problems. We have read that Panasonic and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries are silicone coating their exterior circuit boards. Maybe this will help. Time will tell.
Now if you live in a place with no lizards, mice and ants, maybe the 20th floor of a Makati condo, an inverter might be the best choice. In fact inverters may be a good choice in many urban locations. If expensive repairs are not needed, they can save money. If you live in a suburban or rural area with some greenery, think twice before choosing an inverter unit. You heard it here. You’ll never hear it from a salesperson.
Here is the perspective of one recycler of air conditioning units on inverter air conditioners. Spending some time in these forums will give you a sense of the problems ordinary users have with their air conditioning units.

While the salesmen and manufacturers promote inverter units and fail to tell the customer about the problems, don’t bother to ask them to repair the units under warranty after the first year.  Your gecko problem is your gecko problem and you pay for repairs.  In other words, you were a fool to buy such a unit in an area populated by geckos.  That is basically what Samsung has told us.

In the end we were forced to remove our Samsung inverter with a Daikin conventional unit. This is a steep financial loss, but it was a chance to test a theory of mine.  After thought and research, I hypothesized that a top quality “undersized” conventional unit is the best choice for us.  The Daikin 1 HP FTJ10JXVL9  we installed is rated at 9,500 kJ/h, about 2,000 kJ/h less that the Samsung we removed.  Our bedroom is about 25 square meters. It definitely will not meet the standard promoted my the manufacturers who want you to install an expensive 1.5 or 2.0 HP inverter unit for this size room based on 35C outside temperature. The Daikin was installed on a hot day and definitely ran continuously and cooled the room to an acceptable temperature. Running continuously is highly efficient (the compressor is never cycling on and off) and does a good job of dehumidification.  Our actual use is air con when we sleep.  When we go to bed, both the inside and outside air temperatures are well lower than those proposed by the air con manufacturers. Therefore the 1 HP Daikin will be more than adequate.  The Daikin has a rated cooling efficiency of 10.70 kJ/h.W, nearly as good as the inverter unit it is replacing.

So this is how we are saving money.  Our Daikin cost about P25,000 installed.  A 1.5 or 2HP inverter from one of the major brands would have cost at least P15,000 more, installed.  The Daikin will run for years or maybe decades without significant repairs because of its mechanical and electrical simplicity.  Our Samsung required nearly P6,000 in repairs per year.

We are very disappointed with Samsung, for selling us a unit unsuited to our gecko-infested rural area and then being unwilling to make repairs except at our full expense.

We bought two Samsung split air conditioners in 2011.  The Samsung Inverter has been nothing but trouble, but to be fair the 1HP non-inverter Samsung split we bought at the same time has been excellent.  It is made in China.  The outdoor unit is of sturdy plastic, not susceptible to rusting as the steel casings are.  The condenser fins have resisted corrosion better than the inverter unit even though the conventional unit is more exposed to salt air than is the inverter.  It’s a well-built trouble free unit.

Daikin is a Japanese company with an excellent reputation, but its air conditioners are made in various countries. Our Daikin was made in Malaysia.  We also feel Panasonic makes quality air conditioners but in the one horsepower conventional category the Daikin offered 500 kJ/h more cooling and more cooling per Watt.

  1. My 2 Panasonic inverter Ac are having a major clean up this week and checking the Freon for my annual maintenance, it has been almost 7 years with them and no critical issues. except regular maintenance.that do cost money. From 500 pesos 7 years ago to 1500 pesos this year.


  2. Today our AC technician looked our 3yr old split type inverter AC… and he has deemed our unit dead. He advice us to buy a new unit rather than having the board replace. Ours is a Carrier unit with no traces of lizards being electrocuted I think it just simply died.
    Need to save money for its replacement but I’d rather go back to conventional ones rather than these non-inverters that acts like disposable ACs… 🙁

Hi Bob and Carol, following up from my previous posts back in July 2016, I have made the plunge, I bought a Carrier Optima Non Inverter 1HP for 22k cash and paid 5k for installation including brackets,circuit breaker and everything else needed to get up and running, after the first night i thought i had made a mistake as the big digital letters on the front illuminated the whole room with not much sleep lol, then next day after looking in manual you can actually DE Illuminate with a touch of a button , a 1HP non inverter cools my 14-16 sqm room with ease, not had the bill yet so cant comment on that however a few peso is nothing compared to sweating and sleepless nights , and i dont have to drink as many SML to get a descent nights sleep now.I hope my experience helps others make the right choice as yours did mine. many thanks again, Jimmy in Cabanatuan City

    I am currently using a Daikin 2hp non-inverter for a 25sqm master bed room, it is cold but it keeps cycling on and off especially in the evenings making it uncomfortable for sleeping. After reading your blog I am planning to down size my aircon to a 1hp Daikin split type. I just had my Master bed room surveyed by the aircon suppliers and all of them recommended 1.5hp and 2hp.

    How is your 1hp Daikin split non-inverter cooling your 25sqm master bed room, 1 year later from your blog post?

    is it cold enough for the hot and humid Philippine summer?
    is the cooling temperature stable especially at night for good sleeping?
    is the 1hp strong enough to cool the room to about 25c and stay that cool constantly in the evening for good sleeping?

    I would appreciate your comments.

    • Raymond, as noted we have a 2HP to cool our kitchen-living room of about 50sm. It works well for that. 2hp is way too big for your bedroom.

      We are very happy with our 1HP Daikin. Of course everyone’s 25sm room is different. We have two big windows, one which is quite shaded, the other absorbs quite a bit of heat after noon. We keep the drapes on that window closed. Our ceilings are 10′. We have 2″ of fiberglass insulation in the attic above this room. We do not have tinted or reflective window glass. During very hot weather, the Daikin compressor runs almost continuously. This is good because there is almost no cycling on and off and the dehumidification is excellent. During the cooler months it does cycle on and off more, but if you set it at 25C there will be less cycling. We generally set ours at 27C or 26C. For me, entering a 26C bedroom feels like walking into a freezer. If you want a really cold bedroom and to sleep under duvets, maybe 1.5HP would be better. For us, I am happy we did not accept the advice of the installers. Better to have the smaller more efficient unit and take a few simple steps to improve the operating environment such as insulation, reflective windows or window film, reflective drapes. When running, out unit draws 450 Watts. It’s very economical. There is no question that an inverter unit, properly sized, maintains more stable temperatures. Remember, we had the 1.5HP Samsung inverter in this same bedroom. I feel it had less effective cooling capacity than the 1HP Daikin. That Samsung is all boxed up. You can have it for free, but of course you’d have to pay to have it installed and for the circuit board. Good luck.


  5. Just adding to the echo here. Bought a SCAMsung 2.5hp split type inverter in January 2014 and the controller board in the compressor unit gave up a few days ago (November 2016). Company that sold it to us quoted me PhP 14,000 for parts to replace both the outside board and inside board (both have to be replaced according to them). Considering I’d spent about 50k on the inverter originally, inclusive of installation labor, the depreciation cost for 34 months is about PhP 1,470 / month. While I do not doubt that I did save moreon my electric bill than this amount over the time period, it’s an absolute shame that the value proposition is nowhere as good as I’d hoped.

    Moving now to a new Kolin 2.5hp window type inverter model, which costs PhP 33,500 cash price as of this writing. I’ve been using a Kolin 1.5hp inverter model in another room for over a year and a half and it’s given me no headaches.

    I’m looking into buying an AC and was attracted to buy an inverter type, coz even though its got a high price, it doesnt use up as much electricity thus I can use it more often without worrying about my electricity bill. But after reading this I’m quite undecided now. Does the Daikon AC use up just about the same electricity consumption as the conventional ACs?

    • The Daikin 1 HP split conventional unit is unusually efficient for a conventional unit with an EER of 11.5. In our opinion, much of the energy efficiency advantages of inverter units is exaggerated by the sellers and the complexity and repair costs never mentioned.


    • I want to add to Bob’s answer a bit. I hope you all can understand. This gets into a bit of physics.

      Bob has eluded to this in a few ways. Basically, the savings is pretty much not real true. Sure, they can make a few tweaks that can save a little here and there on their machine. But for the most part, anybody who knows a little of physics can tell you that it will take the same amount of energy to cool a room. Period! There is no such thing, as of yet, of a panacea of cooling here on earth. At least nothing that most of us can afford. It will simply cost pretty much the same no matter what you buy. What makes the inverter so appealing is the temperature is almost flat IMO.

      To reduce the cost, shade your house or room you air condition. Seal up the house/room. If the sun is hitting a wall outside, need to shade it somehow. Malunggay trees grow like weeds. They are plentiful and you can eat the leaves and beans. Be a good way to shade a wall if you have a place to plant them.

      And my personal tip is to leave the AC running. Don’t let the room get hot because it takes a lot to cool down the room and everything in it. You wont save any money unless you leave it off for days. If you leave for a weekend, sure, kill it. Going to work? Leave it running and you can turn it down a little if you want. But don’t let your house/room get hot.

      Probably the best AC to buy is a digital (remote) that has a dry function here in the Philippines. Most important of all is buy the right size. Too big will cool good but not dry the air and the air will feel dank and uncomfortable. Too small will work too hard and may not cool at all.

      • Scott, thanks for your excellent contribution. I agree that a downside of conventional units compared to inverters is that inverter compressors run continuously and maintain a more even room temperature, whereas with conventional units (R22), compressors cycle on on off, so the temperature fluctuations in the room are more noticeable. The fluctuations are not especially noticeable during the hot season as the compressor in the conventional units run more or less continuously, very efficiently and do a great job of dehumidification. This is when conventional units really shine. You know you have the right size conventional unit when the compressor runs continuously on very hot days yet keeps the room cool. A conventional unit which cycles on and off on a hot day is too big and is not running efficiently. Bob


        • Today, I was heading to the store on a trike and I thought of the absolute perfect analogy to explain this so that it is very easy to understand.

          First, think about a car. Gas mileage. In the USA and probably the world they give you two figures which are highway and city mileage.

          When you drive on a highway you drive at a constant speed and you get better mileage. This varies from car to car, weather, diving habits, etc. And in the city you have start and stop which kills your mileage which will also depend on your car and driving habits.

          Now lets put the two together. The inverter is like highway driving. Constant speed and it actually can save you some money. High gear, going fast, low RPM. To save 50% would be under absolute ideal conditions if it is possible with an AC.

          The conventional AC is the same as driving in the city. Start and stop.

          When the AC stops it lets the heat build. And everything in your house will absorb that heat. Then the AC has to power up. When it powers up, it will need twice its rated power to get up to speed. Then it has to work hard to dissipate the heat that has built in while it wasn’t running. So it really does have to work hard to catch up.

          I have an inverter fridge. I often figure my electric bill accurately (+/- p200). My old fridge was conventional and it cost me P500 a month. This inverter fridge has served me well since Yolanda and runs me P250. I received the inverter fridge 1 day before Yolanda hit (Ormoc). Then I stared at it for 3 months until we got our power back on. :p

          The inverter does have great potential. As reported here and other places they also have potential for breaking.

          I have it on good authority that heat kills the inverter board too. Keep them cool and varmint free and they will last you a while.


  7. Hello Bob – I too bought 2 Samsung act inverter in 2011 . A 1.5hp and 1 hp. After 1 yr the 1 Hps pc board broke. So had to spend php5-6k to fix it. was told that I need to install a voltage regulator for each ac as the electric current in our area fluctuates a lot. And can destroy the pub. Took their advice and so far no issue. This year my 1.5hp had a freon leak. San thing is After 2 visits the Samsung guys can’t find the leak and just replenished the freon and told me that if the unit gets warm, to have the evaporator changed. I took your lead and decided to cut my losses and opted to buy a Daikin ac instead. The dealer referred to me actually sells a lot of brands of acs including Panasonic. they do servicing as well. I interviewed each person to tell me which is the best aircon they’ve seen so far, and they all said Daikin. Thanks to this blog I got acquainted with this brand which is not sold in the major appliance centers. I’m now enjoying my new Daikin aircon.


  8. Good day! Bob and Carol ! I’ve read some of the comments here few days already just browsing feedbacks. Anway I’m planning to buy Split type inverter to change my 3yrs old GE window type ac before, it broke up already the tube inside that supply freon leak , freon smells everytime i turn it on and cause some part freezing and turn iced inside few time already repaired just recently but still get broke. Due to heat that bounce back coz heat can’t pass out due to neighboor block my ventilation, my window type ac works well before but just recently it broke up few times this month, so i’m planning to Change for split type inverter.can you advice me which one is better? I’m eyeing for kolin inveter split type before and change it to samsung but i’ve read your feedback so i change my mind. Do you know if LG premium inverter split type ac can be a better choice or panasonic? LG is a bit tempting due to there Moquito away technology and Anti – bacterial feature which is good for my baby. But a bit hesistant if its a good quality? Hope you can give me idea anway thanks. -Joyce


    • Joyce, I would not pay too much attention to those antibacterial, anti-mosquito claims. Generally we advise buying a conventional (non-inverter) unit, either Daikin or Panasonic. They are cheaper and more reliable.


  9. Hello bob and carol and everyone

    After taking your advice, I finally bought a Panasonic inverter! So far no organisms has ever penetrated the circuit board yet. But the it’s really amazing! It has a feature that blows the air into the ceiling so I just feel cold without the wind blowing! And the quiet mode sounds like it’s not even turned on. Even the condenser unit outside is super quiet!

    It also sucks the air from under the unit instead of the usual Top air intake that prohibits you from attaching the unit so close to the ceiling. So I’m free to place theme however I want.

    On the downside, there’s a led light that shines so bright like a diamond in the sky, especially when you want to sleep pitch black. ( I plan to patch it with a white electrical tape)

    Remote control looks also cool, but I don’t like the sliding cover, it looks nice but vulnerable.

    The robotic wind spoiler looks like it’s from the future,( you gotta see it)
    It reminded me of the airplane wings when it’s about to land! Haha

    So thank you for suggesting Panasonic, if it wasn’t for you it would be the last brand I’ll choose because all I hear is carrier carrier and carrier!



    • Hi Wowie, (and Bob and Carol)

      I’d be very worried if my air conditioner sucked air in from below and blew air to the ceiling.

      It is just WRONG as it would NOT comply with the laws of physics. Hot air rises to the top of a room or the atmosphere outside. The fact that hot air rises is why chimneys and air towers work.

      For an a/c to work efficiently there should be good circulation of ALL the air in the room. Blowing cold out at the bottom the air should reach the further corners of the room where it is heated as it passes across the floor and rises to the ceiling of the room. The a/c draws in the hot air at the top, near the ceiling and the circulation pattern is maintained.

      If the a/c was emitting cold air at the top it would immediately fall down in “front” of the a/c and then be cooled again having been possibly mixed with some rising hot air. The a/c would NOT be running efficiently and there would be limited air circulation likely with hot spots in the room. The a/c would be “short circuiting” – search on the web for further details.

      I would suspect that your a/c been wired up wrongly? A DC motor reverses if the current is flowing in the wrong direction.

      I have a Panasonic Econavi Inverter, the indoor unit model number is CS-S9SKQ it sucks in the hot air at the top and exhausts the cooled air at the bottom as air conditioners should. 🙂 🙂

      My biggest query with my electricity is why does it vary so much? It may be useful to others. The house is a bungalow with 100mm thick concrete walls, the roof overhangs by 1m 2.4m above ground level. The is Airofoam below the sheeting in the roof.

      On sunny days we can use 15kWh other cloudier overcast days we use only 9kWh. These are total daily electricity consumption from all appliances, i.e a/c’s TV, refrigerator, shower, PC’s etc. The a/c’s have been hard wired and there are no plugs for installing meters to monitor the a/c’s.

      From the above it appears that the extra 6kWh each sunny day is due to direct solar radiation. Closing the curtains certainly makes it bearable in front of the windows when the sun is shining. In the Middle East in the days before a/c’s houses used to have limited windows high up and air towers to stay cool but it was dark inside.

      For any asking how much power, kWh’s, is likely to be used I hope the above shows how difficult it is to estimate. So I repeat, I think it has already been stated elsewhere on these pages, for each house we only can determine the true power consumption after the a/c is installed due to the many variables.


      • Sorry if we wrote something to the contrary. Our split aircons suck in air at the top and blow it out at the bottom, just as you say. I had a meter on our 1HP Daiken. It drew 450 Watts when the compressor was running.


  10. I have 2 cassette type samsung inverter a/c. The first issue is the lizard electrocution which damage the board. After 3 months Henry Electronics fix the issue. My other unit failed and up to now Henry electtonics unable to fix the problem. My a/c is 30 months old


    • Sorry to hear of your problems. There really seems to be an epidemic of problems with inverters of all brands. Our advice, cut your losses and install conventional units. Inverters put complex, sensitive electronics in a box exposed to bugs, lizards, mice, salt air and so forth. Oh yes, there are also the air con maintainers who clean these units with pressure washers. Would you put your laptop computer outside, exposed to the elements?


  11. Do not buy samsung!!! from my experience in 3 years time I get a lot of problems with it. Their service centers and customer service are very incompetent. Our national aircon lasted for 15 years plus and without any major breakdowns only cleaning


    • Of course your National (now called Panasonic) was a conventional unit. We had an old National split in an apartment we rented. It just kept running and when it needed repair, it was easy to do so.

    Wow! After reading your review, I was hooked in reading all of other peoples comments and your replies. It’s very informative specially that we’re buying a unit tomorow and it’s 12:30 in the morning.

    May I ask, because when I spoke to an AC technician, he said that if a conventional AC’s compressor works nonstop, it tends to overheat. Therefore causing the compressor to shut down. All along I thought it was shutting down because it has reached the desired temperature but it’s not. But you said your daikin does woks none stop without overheating?

    I’m really looking forward to buying an inverter tomorrow but now I’m having second thoughts 🙁

    What brand do you think is ok? We’re thinking carrier, hitachi or gree. But the salesman kept pushing York, (suddenly there was no stock) he said its the best daw, what do you think? Budget is not an issue naman

    My room is around 14sqm but my ceiling is high, it’s like 10ft,

    • Sorry we did not meet your deadline. Frankly most air con salespersons and tech don’t know that much about air conditioners and air conditioning. Compressors are made to run continuously, but only in the hottest months do they do so. During much of the year they run part time. Note that almost all manufacturers offer a five year warranty on the compressor only. They know that compressors rarely fail. Try to look for a five year warranty on an inverter air conditioner circuit board. Our two Daikens have not yet given any problems so far. An air conditioner running full time has a huge fan in the outdoor unit. Realize that most air conditioner parts are made in China. The quality of the unit has to do with the motivation and expertise of the manufacturer in selecting parts for and assembling their units. I tend to trust Daiken and Panasonic but other brands are good.


      • Thank you for replying. I haven’t bought one yet. I was waiting for your reply. Because of that I think I might go for Panasonic. (Because so far I haven’t seen any daikon inverter on SM Malls so far) My cousin who has a Panasonic inverter never seemed to have any problem as well. We both live on the same town.

  13. Wow! I never knew this thing about inverter aircons. Salespersons always tell me that inverters are advantageous in the long run, but if it will cost me a lot of repairs, then No. I’d rather go with the conventional one and still save money. If you won’t mind, can you cite some more merits of getting a conventional one? And how much energy will a 1.5 hp split type conventional aircon probably consume? Thanks XO


    • Unless you have a huge room, I suggest a 1HP conventional unit. Our 1HP Daikin conventional split unit cools our 25 SM bedroom just fine. They are highly efficient when run this way. The cost of running a unit involves so many variables it’s impossible to say how much it will cost. We have a 1HP which runs almost continuously, a 2HP (Daiken conventional — great unit) which runs a few hours per day and another 1HP that is rarely used. We have a big refrigerator, a stand alone freezer, lots of security lights outside and a CCTV system which uses about 100W. Our bill is about P5,000.


  14. Does this issue still apply to new ac models? I have a Kolin inverter ac bought by my family. The downer is that they expect me to pay for the damn unit, in which I did not gave them consent to buy in the first place, but the machine is already there and have been installed. After reading your bit here about these things, I don’t know if what you said still applies to 2016 models, since your post is over a year ago.


    • Probably, although the manufacturers are trying to resolve problems, the fact is that inverter air conditioners are just much more complex. Think of having a high voltage circuit boards and other components such as rectifiers in a metal box outside your house exposed to wind, rain, salt air, lizards seeking shelter and so forth.


  15. We have two Panasonic Econavi inverters that keep breaking down. They are less than 5 years and we have spent so much on repairs already. We just spent 20k on repairs a few months back but now it went back to the same same problem again – not cooling well. 🙁 We are already thinking of replacing it because of the money spent on repairs. We also have the Daikin conventional split type air cons that are older than the Panasonic ones and never had issues. So never again with Panasonic air cons. And if we replace, we’ll go with Daikin too!

    • Good idea but screening, especially as it gets dirty, will significantly reduce air flow meaning cooling capacity would drop and outdoor unit could overheat.


  17. Hi Bob and Carol,

    I’ve just read your site and it is very informative!

    We do happen to own a Samsung 1HP AC inverter unit and unfortunately the outdoor unit compressor finally gave up (rotation error). We had it inspected by a samsung technician who then advised that the compressor is for replacement but to our surprise, they also included the board, which they “insisted” that may cause problems and would not proceed with the replacement if the board is omitted. (Unbelievable and smells additional $$$)

    We’re stuck in deciding to have it repaired since it would cost us around Php13k (board for 5k & reprocessing for 8k) OR get another new unit (Carrier or Panasonic perhaps?) Our concern for the replacement is the durability since they will be under warranty for 3 months only and we’re not sure if the replacement may last that long for another year(s).


    • Was the compressor replacement covered under the five year compressor warranty? Can’t you insist that just the compressor be replaced? I guess you know our decision. I’d just get a new unit. If it was me, it would not be a Samsung.


    • Success if you buy the Carrier. My Carrier inverter gave me an error after 19 months, because the board stopped working. A replacement will cost me $434. That day the technician told me that he himself doesn’t have an inverter but conventional a/c. It’s because of the high cost when they malfunction.
      Now I don’t know if I have to let them replace it or buy a new unit elsewhere (Hilux, Mitsubishi or Panasonic) and with extra warranty on parts, or buy a conventional unit.
      I had a conventional a/c for nine years with little service. I only replaced it for an inverter thinking on the energy I will be saving. Now I regret that decision.


      • So, it’s not just Samsung. I would just buy a conventional unit. I feel the energy savings of inverters are vastly overstated. Inverters are a more complex technology with more vulnerabilities, higher voltages and higher pressures. Just be sure the conventional unit is sized properly — not too large.   18. Hi. I am planning to buy an A/C for my room but i dont know what brand to buy. I heard there is a window type inverter A/C, is it good? Also, the room has 3 windows so it will have more natural light coming in. I dont know what hp should i get because it can be a scorching heat outside. The room size is 11.52sqm. Please help. Been searching through abenson website. Really dont know what to buy. First time buyer here. Thanks


    • Kath, if you don’t have a gecko problem and can afford it, a 1HP split inverter might be the best. Otherwise, a window unit of 3/4HP might be good. There are so many variables!


    • Kolin window type inverter, We like split type because it is more efficient but it is more expensive plus installation. Our condo was turned over and needs two ACs. My dad bought Panasonic 2hp split type inverter and bedroom was designed for 1hp window type AC, We planned to buy Hitachi window type inverter but we’re force to choose Kolin because Hitachi is very expensive. After it was installed it cools the room more efficiently than our inefficient conventional Carrier ACs. In our house, our more than 5 year old 3 conventional AC units blown out compressors, instead of repairing them we will replace them with new inverter ACs. The room we always use has blown out the 9 year old 2hp Carrier window type AC and we replace it with Carrier X Power Silver split type AC that costs 11000 php in installation, it’s better than the Panasonic in our condo. But the installer said that LG is better and we felt regret of choosing Carrier.
      In inverter window type ACs Kolin, Hitachi and Sharp are the brands I knew.

    • After having used inverter on non inverter units in the same room and having years of records of our electrical use, we continue to believe that the energy savings claims (40%, 50%, 60%) for for inverters are vastly overstated. Anyway hope yours works out well for you. Installation in negotiable. Our Samsungs were install for free, the Daikins and others expect P5,000 or so, depending on the complexity of the installation. This is in Iloilo.


  20. Hi , I also have just finished a house project in Cabanatuan and im at the stage of installing AC, I have read all the forums and im going for standard split type non inverter 1hp, can you tell me the model of your Daikin or is it the only standard 1hp on the market at the moment?
    When I spoke to the sales team at Abenson they knew about the lizard stories but never made comments, they also tried selling me a 2hp unit for a 14 sq meter room which I have to sign a disclaimer if I buy a 1hp unit, obviously trying scare mongering tactics.
    look forward to any comments or suggestions regarding a good 1hp unit

      I think that all the major manufacturers sell conventional (R22) units; Panasonic, Daikin, Samsung, Carrier. They are all about the same price P20K. Installation is something to be bargained over. We bought the Daikin FT10JXVL9 because of the available conventional 1HP units it has the most cooling capacity and the highest efficiency. Since we were putting it into a 25 SM bedroom, the high cooling capacity (9,500 kJh) was important. In your smaller room any of them should be fine. Our Daiken 1HP had enough capacity to cool the room on the hottest days. Because on very hot days the compressor ran almost continuously, the dehumidification was impressive. Conventional units are at their best when they run a lot rather than cycle on and off. Running continuously they can outperform inverters because they don’t have to waste power converting AC to DC. The installers had to take out the old Samsung 1.5HP inverter and put in the Daikin. They warned me that I should be putting in 1.5 HP not 1 HP. They were wrong because they really don’t understand the basics. I think most installers and almost all salespersons really don’t know much, and in many cases will just try to sell you the biggest, fanciest most expensive unit they can. One downside of our Daikin and I suppose most conventional units is that they don’t seem to maintain such a constant air temperature as an inverter would. The conventional unit runs until the thermostat temperature is reached and then the compressor shuts down. It may not start up until the temperature rises by several degrees. This is more of a problem in “cool” weather than hot. I am not sure if our Daikin is worse than our Samsung 1HP conventional unit in our spare bedroom or not. Possibly the Samsung is better in that regard but it is six years old so the one you buy today may be a very different machine. The Samsung conventional unit has been 100% trouble free but has not been used very intensively. Good luck. Bob and Carol


      • Hi Bob Carol, thank you very much for a quick reply, Iam having trouble locating a Daikin stockist in Cabanatuan city so will opt for a Samsung,Carrier or Panasonic non inverter type, I will keep you informed of my outcome. I had a survey done by Abenson and ive just received the quote and the guy has actually erased the BTU calculation and increased the formula (room size x 500, changed to 700) to increase BTU needed so a bigger HP unit is required, I find this very amusing and only in the PH


        • If I am in your shoes, I’ll stick to the known AC brand in the country – Carrier. With regard to the required cooling capability, I suggest you do your own research and show it to the salesman. Your money, your rules. BTW, 2HP is big for a 14 sq rm but it wont be stressed bringing the temperature down to your liking. Buying an undersized unit is like driving a 1 liter car. It’ll will take you to your destination but it needs to work harder.


          • I’d like to offer a counter to those who worry about a small aircon unit running constantly. Let’s say on a hot day in a given room, a 1HP split unit has to run more or less constantly whereas a 1.5HP unit will cycle on and off. I propose (with no engineering justification) that the major stress and energy consumption comes when compressors start. I don’t think there is any doubt about that. That’s one reason why governments favor inverter units which have a more even power consumption profile. They are intended to run continuously. That’s easier on the electrical grid, or so I am told. Let’s also make a comparison with two identical automobiles running for eight hours. One is on the expressway running at 75MPH, the other is a taxi in stop and go city traffic. Which use is harder on the vehicle?


        • Jimmy, when they change numbers like that, it is usually a big sign. I went to the post office here in Ormoc to mail a big check to the USA. The price went from P1000 to P1500. I needed it to be delivered fast and I didn’t argue. But it turns out I was robbed P500. Long story short, the post office here know my name to this day. I contacted the Post Master General and took care of the thievery that was done. Point is, if they changed the numbers you need to question them until you are 100% satisfied with what they say. If you AC is too big you might be miserable because a big unit will not dry the air as it should for comfort. Be very careful. Too small may not be able to cool the room and it would run too hard costing you more money. Now, I live in a small apartment and my room is over 6 sqm. Have a hole for just a .5 hp AC. It does very well. Even cold. So it has no problems cooling this down. I would think a 2 hp is way to big for your room under all circumstances. I think a 1.5 is big too. My gut feeling is even a 1hp is a bit big but usable. I would do the math on using a .75 hp. The .75 are really a good size as they are usually a bit more efficient if you look at the numbers and do the math. I had a digital .75 in Arkansas (very humid) and it was a monster. Cooled the master bedroom with a big bathroom and the kitchen. It cooled/dried better than the central air. But there are other factors you need to look at. Mainly the amount of sun exposure on the walls of the room.

          If I was you I would question the change in numbers and not give in until I was in complete understanding to why they was changed. Without that I would complain to Abenson about the numbers and exactly what they was trying to do to you. 14 sqm isn’t big at all and 2hp is crazy big. That is big enough to cool a small home.


          • We have a 2HP conventional unit in our living room/kitchen. This unit would refrigerate — not cool a normal bedroom.


    • Really can’t give any advice. If you live near the sea or have bugs or lizards, avoid inverters of any brand. They are more complex with more to go wrong. I opened the Daikin conventional unit which we bought to replace the Samsung inverter. It was full of evidence that lizards lived in it, but there is nothing for them to damage in this simple conventional unit. If I was going to buy an inverter, I’d probably buy Panasonic.

      In reply to the query regarding Whirlpool air con’s. I would say. “No!” as they are likely to be manufactured in China.

      In the UK I had freezer it broke down just after a year. Just after the warranty expired. A friend had another Whirlpool appliance with a similar story. I now go out of my way NOT to buy Whirlpool appliances.

      I realise my friend and I are a small sample however it may be of help in arriving at a decision much like this site and others pointed me away from Samsung.


      • I have taken apart my Japanese Daikin units and my remaining Samsung “Korean” unit. The Samsung conventional is six years old, entirely made in China and has never given us a problem. Our 1HP Daikin split contains lots of Chinese made components such as the fan motor and the capacitors. I suspect the same is true for all split aircon products. The manufacturers can choose the constituent components from a world-wide supply chain with China at the center. I suppose the quality of the end product depends on the component choices each manufacturer makes and the quality of the overall design. The Chinese are capable of making great products and lousy products. It’s really up to the buyer to select the best components which allow the brand to offer a decent product at a competitive price point. The consumer really has to rely on brand name. For me Panasonic and Daikin would be my first choices.

    • Thanks for the kind words! I really don’t have any thoughts on Hitachi inverter units except to say that inverter air cons are much more complicated with more things to go wrong. We are using three conventional splits now; one Samsung 1HP, one Daikin 1HP and one newly installed Daikin 2hp. I remain unconvinced that inverters save enough over a properly sized conventional unit to pay the additional purchase and repair costs.


    • Hitachi is the first ti release a window-type inverter aircon. I have not heard of any feedback from Hitachi units.
      Panasonic is the pioneer in the AC inverter. I read very good reviews about this brand.

      AFAIK, ALL inverter units have DC parts because only DC motors can be operated at different speed.


        -for a conventional AC window type
        in 3-5 yrs time.. already experienced numerous prob.
        – had to change the digital function to manual since the system keeps on shutting down and malfunction about 2-3yrs. We also had to replace the compressor after 5yrs.
        – the unit is used for about 12hrs daily

        – 12 years and still working well
        – only prob encountered is the auto function to regulate the cooling function.. wherein it continues to cool that we were already freezing but other than that no other prob
        – there waa even a time for about 2 years ( 5yrs old, we used it straight 20-24hrs during my pregnancy amd after I gave birth

    • My brother worked for a power plant in Texas. If there was a problem with the power plant, they called him and he fixed it. Before I bought a Samsung inverter fridge, I asked him about inverters. He told me that the power plant used inverters in some parts of the plant. It’s a fairly old technology. He said the biggest problem they have is heat. He said he replaced many circuit boards because they would burn up. He said they was a good technology but they burn up.

      Correction: AC motors can run at different speeds. Look at a ceiling fan or most large fans. They usually have 3 speeds or more. This is accomplished by having different windings for the different speeds. Why they don’t use different windings on an AC compressor, I could only guess. I know that turning on a ceiling fan at low speed burns them up so the AC probably doesn’t do well with motor heat at lower speeds under a significant load.

      I also know, and Bob can tell you with his watt meter, that the difference in low and high on an AC fan isn’t that great. If I remember right, we had a 35 watt fan and low was something like 20 to 25 watts (not much air at all) and high ran at 30 watts. Perhaps using a more powerful fan will be a much bigger gap in wattage. Actually putting this 35 watt fan on medium or low was a waste of money IMO.

      The reason I brought this up is that perhaps having a multi-speed AC powered compressor would not be so economical. And the more windings you have the bigger the compressor motor would have to be and that would be another reason DC is better because it is a single winding and the speed changes with the voltage.

      To invert AC power to DC is very simple. It takes four diodes to rectify the power AC to DC correctly. Very old technology and diodes can carry a lot of current if you need them too. Raising and lowering the voltage will cause much of the heat on the circuit. This is old technology too and I believe there are several ways to do it. Having a little CPU to monitor and change everything is the last part. I suppose the little CPU was what brought this technology to the home.

      My Samsung fridge put the inverter electronics up high in the back on the freezer part to keep everything cool. I got it 2 days before Yolanda and after we got out power back on (~2.5 months), no problems and it runs very well. With three people using it, it costs about P250 a month. I am very happy with it. Our old fridge was smaller and used twice the power every month.


      • I talked to a guy about electric motors. He says that AC motors can be adjusted by changing the frequency of the AC input (Philippine runs at 60hz). He got very technical and it is a hard subject to understand and this guy is very knowledgeable on the subject.

        In layman’s terms, to drive an AC motor at different speeds, it takes some costly and sophisticated parts such as vector drives. A DC motor such as what is used in an inverter air conditioner, he says that a DC motor has better torque a slower speeds. So in my mind an air conditioner compressor would run at a slower speed so a DC motor would be best to use. A high speed compressor would probably be way too loud and way too costly as they would probably burn valves up pretty fast going at higher speeds because compression creates a lot of heat.

        So, the way the have inverter technology for the home, it is the best and most cost effective way to do it right now.

        Basically, using an AC motor over a DC motor (for air conditioning) is about the same as blowing out a candle with dynamite. It may work but way too much technology for the task.


        • The conventional (using R22 freon) aircons use simple AC compressor motors. They do not vary in speed. They turn of and on when the thermostat tells them to. The technology is basically like an old fashioned refrigerator, cheap, simple, easy to repair. Inverter units use DC compressor motors which can run at variable speeds. To accomplish this they have to first convert household AC current to DC by means of a rectifier. Then they have to have circuitry to control the speed of the DC compressor in response to a room temperature sensor. If cooling is needed the compressor speeds up. Once the room is cooled off the compressor keeps running but at a lower speed. My conventional 1HP Daikin split uses about 450 Watts when the compressor is running. In hot weather it runs fairly continuously because I intentionally used a small unit in a big room. Conventional units are quite efficient when they run continuously, less so when they cycle on and off. When they run continuously they are very effective at dehumidifying as well as cooling. From my experience of cooling the same room with a 1.5HP inverter and a 1HP conventional unit is that the inverter does a better job of maintaining an even temperature in the room. I do not think the inverter uses less electricity. My inverter cost more to buy and much more to keep repaired. I am sure that inverter technology will improve and become more reliable, but they are nonetheless more expensive to buy and more complex and more sensitive to the environment in which they operate: salt air, lizards, insects and so forth.

    Same problem here from India on 12 July 2014 i purchased 1.5T samsung inverter triangle ac model but since the day ac got installed the problems started one after another. Due to which on being a safer i also purchased samsung extended warranty.

    Like ur case by inverter ac’s PCB(circuit board) , which sits on outdoor has been damaged and replaced 2 times but the shocking thing is that both the times PCB of ac got Till now all damaged ONLY AND ONLY when my ac was turned off for some weeks or even months on arrival of cold season in india. But as soon as I turns on the ac the indoot unit display lights just blinks and nothing happens. And why the PCB got damaged 2 times and in the same scenario is not explainable by Samsung technicians they just say the pcb got damaged due to voltage fluctuations.

    Till now all the parts of ac have been replaced atleast once which includes, 1 time compressor, indoor lcd display lights, 2 times PCB, 3 times ac valve on outdoor unit, and on each service samsung technician breaks something or the other of ac body parts and their hooks due to careless opening and closing of ac body covers. And on replacing one part after some time another part of my inverter ac stops working.

    And one biggest problem since the day the got installed and even after replacing its compressor by new one under warranty period (since earlier compressor stopped working completely that too when ac was completely shut down for 1 month due to another part malfunctioning) my inverter ac compressor doesn’t run continuously means it just turns it off randomly and then starts again after 3 minutes and this happens multiple times even after repalcing it with a new one. The Samsung technical persons was earlier not much familiar with inverter technology so they said that inverter compessor also stops itself after sometime after maintaining room temperature ture but after some months they started saying thta YOUR INVERTER AC COMPRESSOR STOPS IN BETWEEN AND DOES NOT RUN CONTINUOSLY SOMETIMES OR MANY TIMES DUE TO VOLTAGE FLUCTUATIONS IN YOUR PARTICULAR AREA.

    ON 10 JULYy ac warranty will be over and till now my problems ate not completely rectified so i m in fear that wat will happen after my warranty got over and relating to my ac’s bad history of continuous parts malfunctioning how will i replace those expensive parts after warranty by mh oqn money.

    Hope samsung again extends my warranty anyhow my charging me any amount of money

      I would not expect too much sympathy out of Samsung. Maybe the circuit boards corrode when not in use. Anyway I expect you will be replacing your unit once you have no more warranty, as we did. It comes as a surprise to Samgung that the developing world has voltage fluctuations? They are good at marketing there but the engineering to deal with well-know developing world conditions lags behind. Actually the compressor in our Samsung Inverter sometimes did stop, perhaps when the cooling load was very low. We have bought two Daikin units in the last few months, both R22 non-inverter units. Inverters are interesting technology, but pretty complicated. The conventional units are quite simple with much less to go wrong. Anyway, thanks for sharing. Bob and Carol

    As I speak, my AC technician is checking on my Samsung Inverter AC which he installed yesterday but didn’t work by the time I got home last night. I was curious to find out why the compressor couldnt start even though the indoor unit was working fine blowing out warm air.

    Google led me to this page of yours which I must thank you for your time and effort in sharing the lessons you learnt. However, I must say this, and this is not because I work at a Samsung factory, but because I’m a fellow consumer who paid good money for my AC set which I had chosen based on the efficiency, economic features and hi-tech functions. So it is just as disappointing to me when I couldnt come home and enjoy the cool air last night.

    I didnt have the time to read all the comments above but I feel someone should point out that your article is very biased against Samsung for no apparent reason other than the fact that inverter technology, which I believe belongs to Mitsubishi at some point in time (vide failed you not because of the technology but because of wall crawling reptiles rarely known in the colder climate technologically advanced countries. The fact that the Daikin unit which replaced the Samsung inverter AC is now serving you very well is akin to the adage comparing apples to oranges. In fact you admitted to how well the non-inverter Samsung AC is performing too.

    I say this because regardless of what you said in the contents of the article, Google will catch the title of this page first, which is, that you gave up on Samsung. Again, I emphasize that I am merely speaking as a consumer who hopes that the problem I am having with my newly installed Samsung inverter AC is nothing to do with the brand (or inverter technology) but more with my incompetent AC technician who admitted he has never installed such a complicated inverter AC before.

    BTW I do have a Mitsubishi Inverter AC installed (6 years ago) in the attic which I hardly use and is still functioning. Like you, my home is also infested with geckos but I keep them out of the house by sealing every gap in the doorway and windows.
    That’s mostly to keep out the mosquitoes but it works just as well with the geckos.
    Maybe that would help with your problem instead of giving up on the inverter technology be it in a Samsung or other brand AC.



    • James, thank you for your post. Samsung is actively marketing inverter aircons across the tropics, not just in “technologically advanced countries”. The problem is not keeping geckos out of the inside of your house. The sensitive circuits are in the outside unit where the geckos abound. Samsung makes many great products, but in my view (three failed circuit boards) they have dropped the ball on this one. Samsung has promoted the sale of these units in the tropics. They and other manufacturers are very well aware of the problems. My issue with Samsung is that they don’t take responsibility for for the problems their customers have. A gecko caused failure is considered and “act of god”, not poor design which makes high voltage circuit boards vulnerable to geckos and other creatures. Inverter technology is impressive, in theory, but it is much more complex, expensive and probably profitable for manufacturers, dealers, and aircon repair persons. Marketing expounds on the advantages, but nary a word to customers about possible problems. Am I biased against Samsung? No. But I do resent they way they have treated us and also having to pay P20,000+ for a unit which I had to discard and spend another P20,000 to replace it. If my Samsung dealer had said “look, you live in an area full of geckos, we have had problems, we suggest you buy a non-inverter unit in your situation”, I am sure the conventional unit would still be working well and we would be very happy and a bit richer.     • Got the same problem compresor stop working suddenly and it woke us up in the midle of the guys couldent figure out the problem and stated that it was ok .but the problem persist on our months brandnew inverter aircon .what could. Be causing this premium inverter is our unit

    This is for Pia and others troubled by ants, termites and cockroaches in Gary’s post of 04-12-15 @09:21 all were mentioned. I can confirm that the method is effective. We got rid of the ants at out last place and we have got rid of them inside the house here in our new and
    permanent location. There are many ants outside looking for new places, they’ll be Ok if they stay there.

    One group of ants had a nest under the tiles in our new location and I tried just “sealing” them under the floor. The wee devils just ate the sealant. Being an experimenting type of person, I made a paper funnel and put two squirts down the small hole in the floor at the tile joins, bye bye ants.

    We have found two dead cockroaches inside the house I don’t know if they ate dead ants from somewhere or sampled the bread and honey, whatever they were both dead.

    I use bread and honey as they are easy to find in the shops, rather than crackers and maple syrup. I mix the spray with the honey and using a small “ice cream” spoon put it on the bread. Four tablespoons of honey and four sprays are enough for 12 “bait traps.” I now use empty Elle & Vire 100g yoghurt pots as they don’t roll and are big enough for the pieces of bread.

    If installing split air conditioners there can be considerable additional costs if there is some distance between indoor and outdoor units. Extra Pipe costs about PHP 325 per foot or PHP 1000 per metre. It cost us PHP 29000 to install our two Panasonic split A/c’s, almost 50% of the cost of the A/c’s. There is extra pipe, circuit breakers etc. included in that PHP 29000.

    The Panasonic split air con’s cooling rage is 16 – 30^C (61 – 86^F). One runs at 30^C (86^F) during the day and the other in our bedroom is set at 27.5^C (82^F). As yet I have no idea of the electricity used as we are on “a temporary supply” and no meter as yet. At 05:00 the one at 27.5^C in the bedroom is working only as a fan.

    • Yeah, getting the pests to come in contact is the trick. I want to report that, I think it was February, it seems the ants was on a rampage. Many, many tried to move in on us. We have one child and one toddler so easy to have a bit of food on the floor. There will always be the scout ant and he will call in the reinforcements when the food is found. But for the last few months I have been battling the ants as they seem to be moving during this time of year. I will bet the same thing will happen the same time next year. But when we get invaded, I will search for their hole and put bait just as close as I can get to them and it works 100%. I now have a little plastic jar with my poison in it (syrup and fipronil) and I take about a 1CM square piece of paper towel and dip it in to make the bait. Most of the time I will go back and check this bait in a few hours and all the ants are gone and the paper towel is actually clean. They suck every drop of the bait off of it. If I see a lot of ants outside I will set some bait out. This works but you still have to stay on top of it.

    I chanced on this website because I was looking for a reputable And not so expensive technician to look at my Panasonic inverter AC. It has been forming ice and lately the motor is making a loud noise. Would appreciate any recommendation.

    Anyway, I’m interested also in your solution using frontline to kill ants. Will those work on termites as well?



    • Sorry I don’t have any recommendation regarding air con technicians. We have only used the ones sent to us by Daikin and Samsung. Glad you bought a Panasonic. Not experience with frontline.


    • Yes Pia, I knew an exterminator in the USA and fipronil is what they used to treat termites. That is the main ingredient in frontline products. Termites is a different monster to treat. I am not sure if you can treat them effectively with a bottle of frontline because I would think you need to treat a very large area.

      I would suggest looking for a large amount. There are other brands. Termidor is a brand that sells it in large amounts. Use google. Or here is a place to purchase this:

      Just be very careful using OLX as there are many scammers on this site.

  26. The same thing happened to my 1 HP samsung inverter. main outdoor board has broken with unidentified cause. it has past 1 year 4 month of operation. and have to pay USD 100 to change the board.


    • There should be some sort of class action against Samsung. Maybe a complaint to DTI. I see reports from all over about Samsung inverters failing but they will not accept responsibility. So when we bought another new 2hp split unit it was a conventional non-split (R22) Daikin.

    • I have heard that there are two lines of Mitsubishi air conditioners. The ones made by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have a good reputation. I agree, Panasonic is good. We are considering buying another Daikin, a 2HP unit for our main living area. The site allows you to compare specs on Philippine air con brands.

                    • Yes, it always worked fine until the circuit boards were shorted-out by geckos. The Samsung was nicely packed into the shipping packages of the Daikin replacement unit and are stored in a spare bedroom. We have the remote control and owner’s manual also. You will have to supply the piping from the outdoor to indoor unit and recharge the unit with gas and the other installation steps. We bought and installed the unit in November, 2010 and took it out in November of 2015 after the third circuit board blew. We will be happy to refund your money if it does not work, but you will have to bear the cost of installation.

    What can you say about Carrier Optima airconditioning unit? It is not an inverter type, but it has a turbo mechanism and claims to be an energy efficient and cost saving unit. And I heard that is is being recommended by Meralco.


    • Sorry, no experience, good or bad, with Carrier. Lots of commercial establishments seem to use Carrier or Kolin, but these are commercial units.

    This is the same problem my mother is encountering with her Samsung Split type inverter in Tagaytay. She has had to replace the circuit board because of a lizard that shorted it. Till now we are waiting on the replacement board!!!.



    • Sorry for your misfortune. Our Samsung inverter is boxed up. We can’t decide what to do with it. Sell it for scrap? Install it elsewhere? But then have to replace more circuit boards. We are so happy to have our non-inverter Daikin and not have to worry about lizards. I don’t see any significant power savings compared to the inverter. We have many years of electric bills to confirm this. I think there is a lot of marketing hype about the savings from inverter air conditioners. The 1HP Daikin seems at least as powerful as the 1.5HP Samsung.

        Ill bet you, no one will beat the cost of my household Meralco Bill for this month. That is already including and still using my Panasonic inverter Split unit during night for 8hours only 7 days a week.

        For total whooping amount of 2785 pesos for this month, that is only, because Meralco raised the extra charges. Not my consumption. Last month my electric bill was only 2012 pesos.

        Last year, the electric bill for the month of June , it was the highest bill ever paid for the amount of 3585 pesos.

        The average electric bill per household in my subdivision still between 15000 and 20000 pesos per month.

        If You want to see and read my electric bill for the last 1.5 years be ready for our rightful bragging rights of our Meralco savings. That is what my wife and I named it, self discipline.



        • David, that is impressive. Our bill last month was P5498.35 for 556kWh @ 9.6798. This included running our new Daikin 24/7, but our daytime cooling is to about 80F, and a little cooler at night. At the same time we bought the Daiken, we bought a used chest freezer in addition to the large Electrolux ref we have had for years. We also use about 43 kWh per month in outdoor lighting as we live an a fairly secluded rural place. We are just adding CCTV cameras. Good CCTV cameras use more Watts than you’d think, to provide infrared lighting for the cameras, at least 12W per camera.

          The Daikin is intentionally small for our 25SM bedroom, meaning it runs a lot. This results in excellent dehumidification, so 80F can feel comfortable. The unit uses 478.5 Watts when it is running. I go outside at night and see the dozens of geckos and just smile as I know that they can’t cause a problem! Bob and Carol


          • My last bill was ~P4200. And that is because the season or the angle of the sun. It roasts the backside of our apartment. But I thought of a way to help keep us cool. Though I will not know how good this actually works until June (May bill), I can tell it is a big relief right now.

            I have been running my window unit (.5 HP) 24/7 for 2 years. And it has done a good job. Only during this time of year it struggles and our bill goes up. This year the AC was really having a hard time. About 3:00PM until late at night or even early morning it would run (compressor on). Hours and hours. And this year I actually was feeling hot while it was running. I thought I was going to have to buy a new AC.

            I have been entertaining a thought of making shade. I don’t like using a tarp as many will do here. When the AC was having issues, I finally put this idea into action. I live in an apartment in a semi-rural area. What I did was buy 150 pieces of 8 foot bamboo sections. We have a fence and I attached them to the fence using wire.


            If you look at that link I put up above, you can see a little farm behind us then the big house you see is a doctors house. Dirty, dusty, and hot here! I am from West Texas and it wasn’t so dusty there.

            This next image, I am pointing West. The satellite dish is pointing South South West. And you can see when the sun goes down this bamboo fence blocks out a lot of the light.


            The AC now cycles like it should and not just run for hours and hours. This project cost me about P2100. I have a bad ankle and I can’t do this all myself in good time. So I hired a guy to help me. He did most of the work for P800. The rest was all the materials. Bamboo (p1200), wire (p100). I haven’t gone around to look but I bet it looks OK. I bet it looks better than a tarp or something similar.

            Just by the way the AC is running now, I figure it will save p1000 on the hot months and it should save some on any day that isn’t raining. This is just a guess because it is hot so extra fans are running now. My next bill for April should be better (p3500??) and the May bill, I figure will be back down to normal territory.

            • Thanks for your report and the photos. Yes, shade should always be a first step. Shade could be louvers, trellises, trees, anything that keeps the sun off your house really helps.


  31. i am a freelance aircon technician and i may say inverter is not for technician without a single knowledge in electronics field because the inverter the name itself has something to do with electronics circuit mixed with refrigeration cycle and electrical motors. inverter unit troubleshooting requires a package skills and knowledge so if your inverter air-conditioning unit have a problem be sure to contact a trusted technician. if ever you contacted a technician without the inverter knowledge he may seem ‘ mangangamote’ due to complicated wirings PCB board etc.


    • Good pm. We have Samsung Inverter Split type aircon and we are very dissapointed. We bought the unit last 2014 and last month its not that cold anymore. Called Samsung customer service and they set us home service check up. They quoted us P4,500 for general cleaning and freon refill. I was so dissapointed knowing that the unit is less than 2 years old. Please help..We need your advice on how much really the cost of gen cleaning and freon refill. thanks.


      • The performance of any aircon will degrade as the filter(s) evaporators and condensers become clogged. We have to clean the filters every week or two and the inside and outside units every six months. In a unit less than two years old you should not need a freon refill unless the unit or installation were defective. Samsung gave us three free cleanings with the new unit. After that they charged us P800 for a cleaning. The cleaning was not especially thorough, a wash of the condenser and evaporator with a power washer. We found that the squirrel cage blower on the inside unit was not cleaned as part of the Samsung cleaning and would gradually become clogged and was quite difficult to clean. Think Q-Tip and toothbrushes!


  32. Hi! Im planning to buy a split type aircon for our living room. Its an old bungalow in the suburbs. The area to be covered ish quite big because its connected to the dining area. Its extremely hot in the afternoons and warm even at night. Maybe because of poor insulation.
    Would you be so kind as to recommend a specific brand and if its better to get a convention vs inverter type unit?

    • Jonathan, well, as you could imagine, I would not consider a Samsung inverter, although the Samsung non-inverter we have in the guest bedroom has not given us any trouble. I would stick with Panasonic or Daikin. Having had a 1.5 HP Samsung inverter in our 25 SM bedroom for five years and now a Daikin 1HP conventional unit for six months, I remain dubious about the money saving claims for inverters. Reviewing our electric bills, the inverter used as much or more power than our new Daikin. I think the real advantage of the inverter is that the temperature in the room remains more stable, as the compressor does not cycle on and off as does a conventional unit. Against this, the conventional units are cheaper and don’t have complex electronics which can go bad. It’s also interesting to note that the 1HP Daikin seems to have more cooling capacity than the 1.5HP Daikin. Against all advice I received from the installers and my wife, and the online cooling calculators, I was convinced that the 1HP conventional unit would be adequate to cool our rather large bedroom. Even on the hottest days (such as today) it can make the room uncomfortably cool. I think this is partly due to its superior dehumidification. Since the small compressor runs full blast on a hot day, it removes a great deal of water and dry air feels cooler than moist air. The worst thing you can do is get an oversized unit which can give you cold, humid clammy air. Hope these unscientific points are of some help.


      • What Bob is trying to convey is the size is important. If you get a unit that is too small it runs all the time and may not cool well enough on the hot days. If you get a unit that is too large, it cools very quick and it doesn’t run long enough to dry the air so you get the clammy, dank cool air that isn’t very comfortable. Size is very, and probably the most important in choosing the right AC unit for comfort.


        • Gray — that’s it. I just add, do not trust aircon sales persons or installers to tell you what size aircon you need. They make more money selling a big, upscale inverter unit. They don’t have to worry about you complaining about lack of cooling power (not that they would be interested in what happens after the sale). Do you own research. Think about what you need. If you want to take a room to 24 or 25C on a 40 degree day you do need lots of capacity. If you only use the aircon at night or can live with a very dry 27C and much smaller unit will do fine and save you money.


  33. I own a Panasonic Inverter split type AC, 2.0 hp, and its been running 24/7 for 7 years now. Apart from cleaning every 6 months (PHP 1200), I had no problems whatsoever. The maitenance people completely dismantle the indoor unit and clean the components outside on the lawn (what remains in the room is the base plate). The only disadvantage I have with the outdoor unit is rust due to the sheet metal housing.


    • Just count your blessings that you did not buy Samsung. I am impressed that they take your indoor unit outside. The Samsung cleaners removed the cover from the inside unit and used a power washer to clean the unit — inside our bedroom! They placed a cockamie trough under the inside unit to catch the water, or most of he water, as they used the pressure washer. Also, they did not clean the squirrel-cage fan which got caked with dust. I had to do that. Now we have a Daikin unit and we’ll see how good their cleaning methods are. The Samsung Inverter is sitting in our spare room, on the floor, gathering dust. We bought the Daikin unit over the Panasonic as it was slightly more power and more efficient than the comparable Panasonic 1HP non-inverter. The Daikin is made in Malaysia. I see absolutely no increase in power consumption going from inverter to non-inverter, but the Daikin does not maintain the even temperatures that the Samsung did.


    • Guenter I also have a panasonic split type inverter. May I know where you are located as I have to pay P2,300 for the same cleaning – complete pull down and wash. I am located in Paranaque.



  34. First time I read of this. But to be fair, Samsung is not the best when it comes to inverter technology. Panasonic is. So maybe this is a design flaw associated to Samsung only and not to other brands. Because honestly, it is very simple to enclose the circuit board with something that will prevent these small creatures from touching them.


    • Well, I wish is was simple to enclose the Samsung circuit board, but there are dozens of wires and connectors which go from the inverter circuitry to other parts of the unit. I’m told the solution is for the manufacturer to coat the circuit board itself with silicone or epoxy so the lizards etc. can run around on it without being electrocuted. I have heard that Panasonic and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is doing this. Anyway, with our new no inverter, there is no circuit board to worry about.

    Besides AC units, I do have another question.
    Are you using the same mounting brackets? If you are not using the same mounting brackets, specially those mounting holes for the brackets. that held vertically the old Samsung ac, I do advise you to weather proof them properly, Not just cement wall paddy, but thoroughly cementing with water proof cement and cement sealant from water leakage . When it rains, those old drilling holes might cause water leakage into your inside walls, otherwise the weather in the raining season will promote dampness. I hope you understand me.

    My experience:
    It did happen to me with one my old outdoor lights ficture. I had it, removed for trouble-shooting the light sensor. then decide to remove completely. That same week, for 4 days straight, it rain hard. Then, I noticed the mildew developing inside the hole around the electrical pipe conduit, water was filtering slowly. My latter got acquainted again with climbing, my cement spatula, the sand paper and my water proofing mix, finally got it patch up, then the paint job of primer and acrylic panting.
    Finally, everything was restored properly.

  37. i agree one thousand percent to the author. All my airconditoning units (7) are samsung inverters. i opened a restaurant in Ozamiz city and the regional manager of samsung was a high school batchmate. With all the ads about converters being economical, i had no second thoughts of buying the samsung model even at a higher cost than the traditional aircon units.i even bought their flat tvs. there was no problem in the first 2 years with maintenance and regular cleaning. The problem started when the circuit boards of the 2 units suddenly malfunctioned and error c just kept popping out in the lcd.i was told that a lizard was burned and caused the malfunction. I had the units repaired and the circuit boards replaced at a significant cost but after using it once for a party the same error came out of the lcd and i complained. I asked for a warranty for the part that was replaced.And to my dismay, the samsung center in manila told me that its out of the warranty because it was again caused by a lizard. I thought it was just a coincidence that the unlucky lizard got caught in the circuit boards, now i know that its not just my samsung but there are also other samsung owners like me who had to deal with such problems. Its not just the financial aspect but the lost time spent for such repairs and withheld significant informations that caused my frustrations and disappointments of Samsung. I know that samsung korea has work and ethical standards, but i agree that when they marketed their inverter units they should have thought of lizards penetrating the circuit boards and causing costly damages as well as other elements that could cause damage to such units. This is something that consumer protection and the DTI people should look into. But for me? I just have to console myself and say NEVER AGAIN SAMSUNG!!


    • I have been considering a complaint to DTI. The Samsung service people confirm that they are busy replacing circuit boards on inverter units. There must be hundreds or even thousands of Samsung customers who have been affected in the Philippines and elsewhere. I have read similar complaints from both Thailand and Australia. I bought my Samsung units from a Samsung-only sales team at a big retailer in Iloilo City. There was no warning that there was a problem, even though Samsung must be very aware that their units have problems. I would like to ask DTI to ask Samsung how many inverter circuit boards have been replaced in the Philippines. Samsung likes to say that the problem is caused by lizards, but really it’s a faulty design. Samsung knows that SE Asia is full of lizards, so why did they not design and sell a product which would be reliable in the lizard-filled places they are selling them?

    • Samsung inverter aircon quality has been the subject of a discussion on Facebook. Here is one post from a very unhappy Samsung customer.
      “I bought 20 units of 1.5 hp Samsung inverters split type air conditioners for installation in an apartment complex we were building, to my eternal regret. ALL of them had “PCB” boards that had to be replaced within a year. Getting replacement boards was a problem.. They were not only very expensive, there was no ready stock. And when they did arrive, a different type of board was sent… One with a “modification” ! And yet, Samsung refuses to acknowledge that the original design had an inherent defect! Never again will I buy anything made by Samsung!!!! Buyers beware!”

      What bothers me is not that Samsung made design mistakes, but how they refuse to accept responsibility for acknowledging and correcting them.


    • Sorry, the failures are not due to brown outs. They are due to circuit board shorts which do not happen during “brownouts”. In any case, any air con unit sold in SE Asia has to be designed to survive many, many brownouts.

    These questions are for you (& your safety) how far apart are the cross walls below the trusses. My concern from the photos I have seen is that the bottoms of the trusses are not tied across the building with steel sections. If there are reinforced concrete beams every 5 metres or so tied in to the external wall soffit beams, I would guess that may be as good tying the truss bottom chords with steel sections.

    Too many people try for absolute rigidity but it is not always the way. Japanese temples have been through quite a few earthquakes and they are built of interlocking logs (log cabin) style which move during earthquakes and settle into position afterwards without too much drama.

    As can seen in this link all American steel sections are quoted as lb/ft withe exception of angles, however the lb/ft are stated. If it is not 3.2lb/ft it does not comply.

    Check the kgs or lbs of a length and the section size should be able to be identified.

    I haven’t attempted to buy steel here but the quality (as in strength or other properties) may not be up to scratch if it is Chinese. Japanese, South Korean, UK, European and American steels meet their quality standards.

    Nowadays for major construction works every piece of steel (or other material e.g. nuts and bolts) should be accompanied by it’s certificates. The certificates may cost more than the steel.

      You raise some good points. There are collar ties up quite high on the trusses. Hopefully they will reduce any spreading. Also the top roof beam to which the trusses are attached should be pretty strong with four 16mm rebar and tied at the corners. You are very correct in being worried about the quality of steel. I knew absolutely nothing about steel quality when we built our house beyond the basics. Generally price is everything at the consumer level in the Philippines and that the Chinese (who probably supply much of he steel products used here) could be supplying the dregs. I am sure better quality is available. Each rebar is supposed to be stamped with codes giving the country of origin and the grade. My main effort was using my caliper to be sure that the dimensions of what was delivered was what we paid for. On many other aspects we did always try to shop for quality over cheapness; plumbing fixtures and fittings, roofing, door hardware, electrical wire and so forth. Together with stronger concrete mixes, our house was fairly expensive for such a simple place. Has we specified top quality steel, the cost would go up further. Just imagine the quality of materials used by most builders seeking to cut corners! On the other hand, houses in the Philippines tend to last for decades, not centuries. It’s the scarce land which is valued. The houses deteriorate in a couple of decades and are replaced. So maybe building for posterity in the Philippines is preposterous! Bob and Carol


  40. I must say, in the Philippines there are some things you can do to make things easier on the pocket. First, seal up you home or the room you are trying to cool. These louver type windows you find in many places will make any AC, no matter which brand, capacity, power, or savings label you throw on it, not work good. The air will not feel good without sealing the room you are cooling. Cool wet air is horrible and unhealthy.

    I have an AC unit in my room and I leave it running all the time. In fact, it cost about the same if I shut it off during the day and here is why. During the evening we get the sun on the wall of the bedroom. Once this wall gets heated by the sun, the AC has to cool it back down. When I got my Carrier window unit, I paid attention. It has a timer on it and I had it turn off after running 12 hours. You would think in the lines of letting it run half the day will only cost half as much.

    When we went to bed I would turn on the AC. The compressor would turn on and not cycle off for a very long time. And when it would finally cycle, it didn’t stay off for long as the wall is hot and it quickly heats back the room enough for the compressor to cycle back on. Maybe off for 5 minutes and run again for around an hour. Crazy!

    I did this for the first week or so monitoring the electric meter. Then I just started leaving the unit running all day. To be honest, leaving it running does use a very small amount more. Very small. It really isn’t worth shutting it off during the day so I leave it running. Keeps the air clean and the room cool (80-82F). Difference calculated in the power bill is maybe three hundred pesos or about 1kwh extra a day. But I figure the compressor will last longer as it doesn’t really have to work as hard. The extra money can be the fan that runs 24/7 on the unit. Your results will vary.

    The only time I turn off the AC is when I will be gone all day and this is more so for safety reasons.

    I really like the info on the inverter units. I have had my eyes on these for some time. I do have a Samsung inverter fridge that I am very happy with. I will buy a Panasonic if I ever get around to purchasing one of these (thanks David).

    And any AC installer worth his weight in spit will tell you that size is everything in the AC business. If you get a unit that is too big, it will not cool right as it will not stay on long enough to remove the access humidity in the room. And too small will cause the AC to work way too hard and fail early in its life and may not be able to cool the room it is installed in. Bigger isn’t always better. Do your homework and get the right size for the place you are cooling. I think this is what makes inverter type air cons a good choice as it will basically adjust itself to the size of the room. Just don’t get one too small.

    Lastly, if ants are a problem, there is a poison you can buy that will take care of them for many years. It is called fipronil. In the long run, it is cheaper than any poison you buy at the store. The poisons they have here are a joke.

    I use fironil by making a bait. Add it to pancake syrup and maybe dip a cracker in it. I don’t have ants in my home. And if I see them they get a treat! Note: this is not legal to do in the USA… read the label!

    Fipronil is used to combat many types of pests. You can apply it directly to your pet to keep the fleas off. Major exterminators in the USA use it for roaches and termites. Treated for termites, one company says the treatment will last 7 years as I knew a guy that was an exterminator.

    There are a few ways to get this here. One brand is Frontline. Google it. There is another brand made here in the Philippines called Effipro Spray. If you treat your AC unit with this I am sure it will be free of ants for many years. Treat it where the rain wont wash it all away. Be careful of the high voltages.

    How I make this bait is important. I use 1 spray per ounce of syrup. The trick is to poison them but let them die slow. They take the poison back to the nest. Fipronil will kill them if they contact it. If one ant dies from it, any ant that touches the dead ant will die too. It does work if you use the right amount. If you use too much the ants will die too fast and not work as well.

    They say that the insect cannot detect fipronil and that is why it works so well. And if they take the poison back to the nest, then even the queen gets the axe eventually. I read if used on roaches, one roach treated will kill about 10 other roaches that come in contact with the treated roach.

      Thanks for your comment. Someday I would like to compare energy use between continuous running and just running at night and seeing the difference in power consumption. I do have a “Kill-a-Watt” type Wattmeter which can measure cumulative power consumption in kWh. I could measure both ways and make a report. It’s hard for me to imagine that running 24/7 could be as cheap as night only because the night is when the cooling load is the least.

      Thanks also for the ant tips. We have not had ant problems with our split A/C units but I have heard of ants blowing out inverters in Australia. But, we do have lots of ants in our house so we’ll have to look for some Frontline.


      • Bob, the only way to explain it is the wall heats up. It gets the late afternoon sun and you can touch the wall and feel that it is quite warm. The AC has to work all night to cool it back down. I didn’t stay up listening to the AC cycle but as I said I looked at our meter which is digital at the same time every day. There just wasn’t much of a difference.

        To do your experiment, it may be hard to find equal temperature and sunlight days. And your results will vary from mine especially if you have shade on the wall or the wall isn’t in the sun during the evening. This is just the best way I found to run mine. It cost a little more but worth it as I don’t have to walk into a hot bedroom.

        I will give you a few more tips about the ants. The frontline spray is expensive and if you go around spraying everything, it will be gone fast. That is why I use it as a bait. It makes it last a very long time.

        But, if you find access to a hole they live in, sure, give it a squirt. Rain may clear it so be aware of that. I moved into an apartment in Angono. The front door was covered. But on each side of the door I noticed two tribes of ants (different color). I gave each side a squirt and never seen the ants again.

        Make the bait with syrup, 1 squirt to 1 ounce and dip a cracker in it. I set it on a piece of thin cardboard and put it anywhere I see ants and it has got every one of them. A few times others have came around but they go the same way. This way turns out to be very cheap as a few ounces of syrup will last a very long time even on a large home.


        • Hi Gary, I know what you mean. We run our unit at night and in the morning the floor and walls are quite cool. All that coolness dissipates during the day and the air conditioner has to start from scratch cooling off the very same floors and walls once again. Bob

          I have started my experimentation on air con power useage. This is for a 25 square meter bedroom with 10 foot ceilings using a Daikin 1HP conventional split air conditioner. These are only the first results.

          Daytime power use is .29622 kWh per hour x 12 hours = 3.55 kWh. Right now our power costs about P10.5 per kWh so the cost per day for daytime use is P37.31 or P1,1119.30 per month.
          Nighttime power use is .163584 kWh x 12 hours = 1.9630 kWh or P618.34 per month.

          I would say that daytime conditions were typical but not extreme, say 85-90 degrees. Since it’s December, nighttime temperatures were cooler than they would be in the summer.

          The measuring instrument was the invaluable WANF Ammeter which is similar to the “Kill-a-Watt” meter which is popular in the U.S. It measures Watts currently used, cumulative kWh used, voltage and other stuff I have not used yet. I’ll post some photos later.

          The Daikin air conditioner unit uses about 850 Watts when the compressor is running and about 30 Watts for the fan when the compressor is off. The testing was started with the room already cool.

            And can you give an idea of how many hours the walls on this room gets sunlight? I guess the time of day would be the best answer. My room was being hit from about noon until sun down and it would make the wall almost hot enough for dinner! (block walls)

            Yes, I understand the tool you are using or the watt meter. I have a brother who is a journeyman electrician in the USA. This is in my environment as he has taught me a lot about electricity. So I do follow you.

            In your test, you also have to consider large appliances in your room. Using a TV or computer will need to be factored. Watt is heat. So in a perfect world, if you are using a 100 watt TV then it will take 100 watts to cool the room back down. Or a 100 watt TV is actually using 200 watts if you have an AC running. Something to think about as you may get different readings on the same type of day if you don’t factor this stuff in.


            • Hi Gary, again you make very good points. I agree completely that our figures apply only to our circumstances. There are so many variables to consider. Our bedroom has two uninsulated 6″ hollow block exterior walls. Both have huge single pane casement windows. One faces a bit south of east and is almost entirely shaded by trees and bushes we have planted. The other exterior wall is faces a tiny bit west of north, but there is no shade and so we do get significant heating when the sun is in the west. I do have my computer equipment in this room. The computer, UPS and monitor draw 75W. The lighting is four 7.5W Philips LEDs. We do have some insulation in the attic. We have a Winix air purifier which uses between 10W and 25W depending on the setting.

              Really the whole point of this experiment is trying to find a solution to my allergies. We’ll almost always use the aircon at night. I thought keeping the windows closed and using aircon during the day might help my allergies. It seems to help but I wanted to know how much it will cost us.

              A couple of other observations on changing from our Samsung Inverter to the Daikin non-inverter.

              The inverter was quite a bit better at maintaining an even temperature in the room. The Daikin can swing as much as five degrees F from the time when the compressor shuts off and when it turns back on. The two units are both quiet, although the inverter could be noisy when running at a high speed.

              Although the “experts” and on-line calculators advised a 1.5HP unit or even 2HP, I am confident that our 1HP (9,500 kJh) will cool the room adequately, no matter how hot it is. The Daikin seems quite efficient and will be more so as it runs more continuously during hot weather. Remember that inverter units use extra power to convert AC to DC and can sometimes be less efficient than conventional units for that reason. Given how often my Samsung inverter was opened up for service, I had several chances to see the big heat sinks on the AC to DC inverter. This is wasted energy.


              • Yes to get something exact you will have to micro-manage this whole project. I don’t know how deep you would want to go but I do know that direct sun hitting the block wall will make the AC work hard. And that is one of the biggest things to look out for. The other as I mentioned in my first post is sealing up the room. You say you have solid windows. I have louvers and what I did was cover the screen in plastic. Then I have a brown nylon shower curtain that looks OK that I cover the plastic with. It is in the back so nobody sees it. But it works extremely well. The window has very little heat as the shower curtain grabs all the radiant heat before it gets into the house. It blocks the sunlight so we are not up at 5:30am every morning.

                Allergies! Yeah I have near serious allergies too; house dust. If I get into something that is dusty I will actually get sick for a few days. Stay in bed type sick. Been that way all my life. And I had the exams so I know what my allergies are. Dust is my worst allergy.

                So allergies is in my environment of knowledge too. And I can give you one tip that helped me more than anything.

                I couldn’t believe how much dust is in the air here in the Philippines. You think dust and dry go together and not dust and humid. Every time I turn around I have to clean the AC filter. Well, one night we was at Riverside mall in Ormoc and we seen a vacuum cleaner in the CDR King. P1200 (1080 now) so we picked it up. I vacuumed everything I could around the apartment with it. I vacuum the bedroom every day mainly for loose hair on the floor (baby plays on the floor in the cool bedroom). And besides a cleaner floor I noticed the AC filter takes a long time to get real dirty. I haven’t been sick since I got the vacuum because I took away the problem.

                Sweeping it just moves the dust around and you still have the problems. Vacuum takes care of it. I take it you have the same allergy as most people are allergic to dust. This can help you.

                When I cleaned my bedroom, I moved everything out so I could get all the dust. That is important.

                It also has a blower function which works fairly well for a cheap vacuum. It seems built well and well worth the money I think especially if it helps relieve your allergies. It really is very handy to have.


                • Thanks for the tip about using a vacuum cleaner rather than a broom. We did buy an AEC shop vac supposedly with a HEPA filter. I will give that a try. We are in a very windy spot, surrounded by fields so we get lots of dust. I have been keeping my windows closed and use that new Daikin 24/7. At night it’s set at 80 degrees, during the day at 85 or 86 degrees. We just got our first electric bill for about P4,000. That includes a big refigerator, a small freezer and security lighting. We can live with that.


                  • P4000 sounds like a dream. And that setting during the day looks ideal too. My AC is pure old school and I don’t mess with the temp because that can turn into bad habits and cost more. This time of the year I am getting hit hard by the evening sun and my electric goes up P500 at least. When hot season gets here it will be a bit more. It does look like you have this nice and streamlined. I have an induction stove (1200w) Rice cooker (300w) Bedroom AC on 24/7 (500w) Induction Fridge (100w) lights, computer, TV and what-nots (~ 100w) and my bill runs about average of P3000 per month.

                    I just made my visa run and was gone for 6 days. When I came home I turned on my AC to cool the room at around 6PM. At 10 we went to bed and the AC still was working hard and that is 1KWH every 2 hours it runs. The room felt cool but it was still working. It really doesn’t save me much money if I shut it off during the day.

                    It will not take long to notice a difference using the vacuum. I got a very cheap one mainly to see how much it would help. It did go far beyond what I expected. It isn’t hepa but it does get most of the dust.


                    • Bob, There was a mix up with our power bills last month. We got our neighbors bill that lives right next to us. They have the same size AC unit as we do. They also have pretty much the same appliances we have with one exception. We use an induction cooker and they use gas.

                      They run their AC only at night. As I relayed, ours runs 24/7!

                      The difference in our bills? Well we do pay more… Our bill was ~P2900 and theirs was ~P2600! I figure that would account for the cooking. I probably have my room sealed a bit better than they do. But they have some shade while I don’t have any as we have an open farm field directly west of us. There is still some variables but I have no doubt that leaving it running isn’t costing [much] extra and the comfort is worth what little more we pay if any.

                      Seeing their bill did make my girl friend a believer.

                I have been reading your experience with interest as I am about to purchase split ac units for the house I am building in Davao. I share your feelings about inverter type units and will opt for conventional split units.
                However, in all of the posts I cannot find any mention of what temperature you are setting your thermostats to, i.e. what ambient room temperature are you running at.
                All of the comments about ac sizing and power consumption surely are totally related to how much total cooling your units have to deliver. For example your 1hp unit is probably fine if you accept room temp of 27C, but may not be adequate for someone such as me, looking for room temp of 23/24C.

                  You make an excellent point about temperature preferences. Tonight it is 28C in our bedroom and the AC is shut off.This raises the point about seasonal differences too. Using our 25SM bedroom with the 1HP Daikin (which has a cooling power of 9500 kJhr, unusually high for a “1HP” unit) I’d say if you want to cool to 23/24 there will be some very hot days when you will have to get a bigger unit to get to 23/24. Keep in mind though the prodigious dehumidification one gets with a unit on 24/7. Comfort is a combination of heat and humidity. When it is 37C outside, the 26/27 MAY feel comfortable. To be sure, get a 1.5HP. The cooling power of 1.5HP units varies quite a bit between brands. My wife and I have somewhat different tolerances for temperatures. Her ideal is a cool room sleeping under a cozy comforter! I like to reemphasize that cooling with a conventional unit is more jerky as compared with an inverter. Our Daikin does not maintain an even temperature as well as our old Samsung inverter (when it was working!). You may find yourself reaching for the remote more often to adjust the temperature. Perhaps other brands do better, but non-inverter units are cheaper and more basic. We recently installed a 2HP Daikin conventional unit in our kitchen/living room. Such a unit would turn or bedroom into a cold storage locker, so don’t go overboard. Good luck. Bob and Carol


  41. For those with air conditioners without timers.

    I bought for PHP1000 from Ace SM City, Cebu Nov 2015, (PHP900 on Meiji web site a Meiji Air Con to Fan Timer TC-V300SR – 20A 4400W 220V (4.4kW) . The timer has two sockets one for an air con and one for a fan.

    BEWARE -The 30/50A plug (on the device is offset to RHS. My air con socket is against a wall on the LHS so the timer would NOT plug in. I had to buy an extension lead and a Leviton 30/50A plug, (in ACE hardware). I cut off the attached plug then the 30/50A plug was fitted to the extension lead. I was offered a proper 30/50A socket rather than the extension lead but they didn’t have 3 core wire.

    On 30/50A plugs and sockets with the earth is at the top or bottom the other pins are horizontal NOT parallel.

    The Timer is now tie wrapped to the extension socket for security. The Air con plug and the timer are again securely tie wrapped to the extension.

    Using the timer one can select from:-
    1) Timed (Set Hours and Minutes first) [Air Con socket first and then Fan socket]
    2) Cool [Air Con only]
    3) Fan [Fan Only]
    4) Off

    I have it Timed for 6 hours air con before it switches to the 16″ Camel fan on low speed blowing diagonally across the bed.

    For those interested the room floor area 10.7m2 and with 2.75 high ceiling the volume is 29.4m3.

    The air con is a Sanyo (“Window Type” model unknown)(Auto Swing switch, Thermostat & Select-off, fan, lo, med or hi cool). It may be similar to a newer Panasonic model as Sanyo have been “integrated” with them.

    We appear to be saving over 2 units per day so that would be over PHP 8000 per year for 1 air con. 1 unit costs about PHP 11.4 in Cebu.

    At current rate of saving the pay back period for the device less than 40 days.

    Hope that saves someone a few pesos possibly for a coffee or two 🙂


    • Thanks for your very informative reply. It’s very true that by morning aircon really may not be needed. I noticed with our now-gone Samsung Inverter, that in the early morning hours its compressor would stop trying to spool-down and would just shut off, just like a non-inverter would. Perhaps because it was an older Inverter unit, the compressor’s ability to slow down was limited. Our new Daikin has quite a strong fan built and the unit itself has a shut off (and shut on) timer, but I don’t know any way to turn off the compressor without also turning off the fan. We could turn on our ceiling fan at the same time as the aircon and then when the aircon went off via the timer the ceiling fan would still be running. Since we got the Daikin we have not been using our ceiling fan, which uses 80 Watts. Of course the preferences of ones sleeping companion have to be carefully considered!


    • Using a fan along with your air conditioner really does help. At first we used the ceiling fan in our bedroom but it uses more electricity (80W) and circulates the hot air at ceiling. Now we use our Winix air purifier at the foot of our bed. It collects the cool air at the bottom of the room, purifies it and blows the cool purified air directly on us while sleeping. It uses about 35W at medium speed.

    I'd suggest for comparing apples with apples others use kJ/hr rather than horsepower. 🙂 as I have seen 1.00hp & 0.80hp a/c's from different manufacturers giving the same kJ/hr cooling capacity. A 20 – 25% error depending on how you look at it, this is why I have quoted the kJ/hr as the kJ/hr cooling capacity to HP ratios seem to vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

      Thanks for the info. You are certainly right to look at kJ/hr, not horsepower. I mean really using “horsepower” to rate inverter air conditioners. What a throwback. Our Daikin 1HP is rated at 9,500 kJ/hr with an EER of 10.70, almost as efficient as our old Samsung inverter. From this I calculate 888 Watts. The Daikin seems to be just about the same cooling power as our old Samsung inverter which was rated at 11.63 kJ/hr and 840 Watts. I have no idea on how inverters can be rated for Wattage as it varies depending on the cooling load. It could be using 1,200 Watts on turbo mode or 350 Watts when running slowly.   43. Very informative and well written article Bob. I will say, though “knock on wood”, I have had three Panasonic inverted units running nearly a year now with no maintenance issues. Just every six months cleaning, which was free for the first year and will now cost P600 per unit in the future. We have plenty lizards here about even though I am on the outskirts of Manila.

    I have two 1 hp units in smaller rooms and a 1.5 hp in my 22 sq meter master bedroom/man cave/blogging den. One smaller unit is used only occasionally when we have guests. The other two units run at least 12 hours a day, each, and I try to keep both rooms that they serve at about 25 degrees C. Before I bought these Panaonics I had two cheap 1 hp Gree cheapy units in the same rooms. These noisy but dependable units gave yeoman service for 6 plus years. After replacing the Gree’s with the Panasonics (and replacing my refrigerator with a Panasonic inverter also),
    my electric bill month after month is about half my proceeding year’s bills. A lot of changes were made to the house as well, so scientifically stating exactly how much of the savings is due to the Panasonic inverters is impossible to say, but suffice to say I am a pretty happy camper.

    One thing you don’t address is the noise level. Since the fans in the evaporator (internal) half of the unit are DC motors as well, the near silence during TV watching and later sleeping is very much appreciated. No AC fan can compare, IMO.

    I fully believe Samsung has treated you badly, right from the early days when you caught them in a lie/engineering inaccuracy with their specifications, and I certainly wish you the best l\of luck, but I tend to believe you’re translating a lot of unhappiness with the customer service policies/lack of response of Samsung onto inverter air cons in general. I recommend inverter units (at least from Panasonic) highly.

If it was not for the inflated specs on the Samsung website, I too would be be running Panasonics and probably they still would be going strong. I have heard from several readers who have had no problems with their Panasonics. One told me to just tear out the Samsungs and buy Panasonic!       Knowing Bob and Carol, from all the reading Ive done on many issues, I believe he will make the best decision based on the area he lives and surroundings. Not all AC inverter are not made for everyone, but finding quality items vs quantity, I believe that will be his game plan.

  46. I Like to add my 2 Panasonic AC inverters are almost 5 years. Maintenance and service is a most to maintain, Again, the rice paddies are about 250 meters away from us, and the AC sit on the second floor balcony. one in the front and one in the back. My friend you just have bad mojo with Samsung.

    In my opinion Samsung are good with TV’s and cell phones but not AC’s.
    Which you the best luck with them….

    I own 2 Panasonic inverters AC/s, and had no problems with them neither mechanical nor animal. Except for 800.pesos fee for maintenance every 6 months. True enough, they are expensive, but Samsung AC are not quality made AC. not like Panasonic AC, Panasonic AC ARE in that business for a long time, Just like carriers ac.

    About savings, Ill put any of my ac against any other brand, ill guarantee you, my Panasonic be the leader in savings and maintenance. I did my research before buying them. I guess I did my home work properly.

    i think your ac is missing a component that protects those boards from aliens! My Panasonic ac have a shield component that protects them from those creatures. If the ants are eating your circuitry or boards is because the manufacturing was made with sweet polymer chemicals.

    Just get rid of them and buy Panasonic……

      They look solid, very fortunate for me,I was able to glimpse the inside of them, and the unit look top of the line. Lets hope you have better performance and longevity with them. They do have a solid and shield housing where all the electronics reside. That is a plus for me.
