Monthly Expat Meetings in Iloilo City, Philippines

Foreigners living in Iloilo City can attend two expat gatherings each month.

On the first Wednesday of each month and the third Wednesday of each month at Langford Place restaurant near SM City. See http://www.thenewstoday.info/2007/04/16/langford.place.where.friendship.and.love.for.food.go.together.html

Meeting is something of a misnomer.  There really is no meeting.  Expats show up, introduce themselves and order a beverage.  There’s generally a mix of Europeans and Americans.  The number of people showing up is highly variable from a handful to a couple of dozen.

There is an online group for Iloilo expats.  You can sign up at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Iloilo-EXPATS/

It’s not a busy group but you will receive advance notice of the meetings.  If you have questions, it’s a good place to ask them.

There’s another excellent online discussion group covering life in the Philippines.  It’s heavily moderated to prevent flame wars, and some degree it seeks to present a “rosy” view of life in the Philippines, limiting discussion of the negatives of life in the Philippines.  It’s a commercial site and in some cases gives fuller coverage to those who pay for advertising.  Still, it’s the single best online resource for those considering retirement in the Philippines. I’ve been a member of this group for years and have benefited tremendously.  You can sign up at:

  3. I like the food at Butot Balat – the little one off Jalondoni.

    • Yes, it’s a quiet little island in the middle of the city — a nice place for a leisurely lunch. I like their BBQ ribs.
